The Upton Select Board on April 14 approved three library-related actions and finalized the town’s 2026 scholarship allocations.
Library Director Matthew Bachtold asked the board to authorize up to $600 from the Lora Dearth Library Trust Fund to purchase books as directed by the trust document; the board approved the expenditure unanimously. Bachtold also presented acceptance of a $500 unsolicited gift from a Bank of America Charitable Gift Fund to be deposited into the Library Goodfortune Fund for children’s programming, and a $2,000 gift from Friends of Upton Library Trust, Inc. to fund Sensory Playtimes; both gifts were accepted unanimously.
On scholarships, Chair Laura Hebb recused herself from the discussion. Members Brett Simas and Maureen Dwinnell reviewed eight anonymous applications and agreed Applicants #2 and #4 would receive $200 scholarships, with the remaining six applicants each to receive $1,000. The board instructed staff to forward recipient names to local schools so awards can be presented at scholarship night.
All motions recorded in this section passed unanimously. The board expressed appreciation for donor support and for the quality of student applications.
