Marlborough Parks & Recreation previews summer staffing and event schedule

Director Ray Bull told the Marlborough Parks and Recreation Commission on May 11 that most summer staff are returning for the season and that the department will interview additional lifeguards ahead of the Memorial Day weekend.
Bull said staff will install swim lines on Thursday, May 21 as part of lake preparations. He also outlined the triathlon schedule: a series beginning Thursday, June 18 and held every other Thursday through July 30, with an Olympic-distance triathlon slated for Saturday, Aug. 15 at the lake. The commission noted the triathlons and lake staffing needs while discussing event logistics.
Bull reported the 9th annual Kid’s Fishing Derby on May 2 drew 15 children; winners received trophies and a $25 Dunkin' Donuts gift card. He said trophies, gift cards and supplies for the derby were paid for with a $250 donation from Commissioner Dave LeJeune.
The commission reviewed the summer concert series, a seven-show schedule that begins Thursday, June 25 and includes a children’s concert in collaboration with the library on Thursday, July 23. Performers listed by the director are: Windham Concert Band (June 25), Judy Pancoast (July 23), Nightshift (Aug. 6), The Stevie Experience (Aug. 13), Seat of Our Pants (Aug. 20) and Shaded Soul Band (Aug. 27), with July 9 to be announced. All concerts begin at 6:00 PM.
Other calendar items Bull announced included the Lions Club Around the Lake Road Race on Sunday, May 24 at 10:00 AM. Commissioner Louise Concodello said the America 250 committee is collecting local business donations and plans to hire a DJ for July 4; the committee requested extra lake staff for that date.
The meeting record shows the commission accepted a Mom’s Club offer to replace sand in the playscape sandbox; Concodello thanked the group. The meeting adjourned at 6:28 PM.
