Marlborough selectmen review revaluation impact, table truck purchase and schedule conditional special meeting

At its May 5 meeting, the Marlborough Board of Selectmen reviewed the town's recent property revaluation and its potential effect on the budget and taxes. Town Manager David Porter presented material he delivered to the Board of Finance on May 4, and selectmen discussed possible areas for additional funding and further review.
Porter told the board that sewer benefit charges sent last month have yielded about 85% payments to date and that year-to-date real estate tax payments are approximately 99.24% collected. He also reviewed several infrastructure items that could affect near-term spending, including South Buckboard culvert paving and design work for No Main and Cheney Road.
On capital spending, Porter presented a Freightliner proposal for a DPW single-axle dump truck to be paid from speed-camera funds. Chair Susan McFarland questioned the difference between the current proposal and earlier cost estimates and moved to table referral of the procurement to the May 19 meeting so staff could produce more information; the motion carried unanimously.
Separately, McFarland moved to schedule a special Board of Selectmen meeting for Monday, May 11, 2026 at 4:00 p.m., contingent on the budget referendum failing. The motion was seconded and approved. Selectmen later reported under updates that the referendum passed and the conditional special meeting would not be needed.
The board left detailed budget decisions for follow-up, flagging options discussed with the Board of Finance and asking staff for more cost comparisons and funding scenarios before the next meeting.
