Vincennes Mayor Joe Yochum told the Knox County Board of Commissioners on April 7 that the Vincennes Animal Shelter will cancel its interlocal agreement with the county effective May 7, 2026. After that date, the shelter will not accept animals found outside Vincennes city limits.
Commissioner Kellie Streeter and President T.J. Brink thanked the mayor and the shelter for their service over the years. Sheriff Doug Vantlin told the board he has identified three outside kennels willing to provide housing but noted any arrangement will require an interlocal agreement. Vantlin said housing animals at the sheriff’s office is not feasible because of disease risk, proximity to K-9s, lack of space and personnel constraints, and potential legal exposure if inmates were used.
No formal action to contract with a specific kennel was recorded; commissioners and the sheriff indicated an interlocal agreement will be required if the county pursues outside kennels.
