HOBART, Ind. — At its April 20 meeting the Hobart City Redevelopment Commission accepted first‑quarter reports for two Education and Workforce Training grants, approved a Register of Claims totaling $47,678.71 and approved bond requisitions totaling $19,200.18 tied to 69th Avenue projects.
Kate McGill read Q1 reports for the Merrillville Community School Corporation and the School City of Hobart. Merrillville’s construction instructor, Mr. Taylor, told the commission the program is a little behind schedule because of minor design changes; equipment cabinets originally planned for outside will be housed inside the school, and no grant funds had yet been spent though staff expect expenditures soon. Hobart’s Q1 report likewise noted minor delays tied to equipment purchase differences and reported no spending to date. Commissioner Mark Kara moved to approve both Q1 reports; Commissioner Jeremy Cartagena seconded and the motion carried 4‑0.
Staff presented a prepaid OpenGov annual payment of $29,836.80 (previously authorized), plus invoices from engineering and legal firms; the Register of Claims presented totaled $47,678.71. Commissioner Kara moved to approve the Register of Claims and Commissioner Cartagena seconded; the motion carried unanimously.
Bond requisition numbers 78 and 79 totaling $19,200.18 for 69th Avenue projects were presented and approved (motion by Commissioner Cartagena, seconded by Commissioner Kara; vote 4‑0).
In the staff report, redevelopment staff said a third appraisal was authorized for the 37th Avenue (car wash) site as purchase negotiations continue; payment and transfer of a Public Bar and Rec parcel are pending deed acknowledgment; and an Align Energy Lounge ribbon‑cutting will be scheduled after interior rehabilitation. Staff also said a development mixer hosted earlier drew 42 attendees and generated investor interest for 2026 redevelopment opportunities.
All financial actions were recorded as motions and approved by unanimous vote; no new grant awards or bond issuances were approved at the meeting.
