Hobart Plan Commission approves economic development area for I‑65 & 37th Avenue corridor

The Hobart City Plan Commission voted 7‑0 on April 2 to approve Plan Commission Resolution 2026‑01, endorsing a Hobart Redevelopment Commission declaration that creates an Economic Development Area covering parts of the I‑65 and 37th Avenue corridor.
Matt Reardon of MCR Partners, who presented the plan to the commission, said the Economic Development Plan targets corridor improvements including roadway upgrades, lighting and targeted property acquisitions to support future mixed uses. Reardon told commissioners the plan does not change existing zoning or the thoroughfare plan but would allow coordinated redevelopment and public‑infrastructure work across several jurisdictions, including some unincorporated County property that the RDC and City may seek to incorporate.
The plan packet also identifies a sanitary district parcel in the area that could be repurposed for housing, mixed uses or commercial/industrial uses as redevelopment proceeds, according to the presentation. Commissioners approved the resolution by voice vote (motion: Stuart Allen; second: Mark Kara).
The resolution the commission approved mirrors language in the Redevelopment Commission’s earlier Declaratory Resolution and Economic Development Plan and functions as the Plan Commission’s written finding that those documents conform to Hobart’s plan of development. The Plan Commission directed the secretary to attach the approval to the meeting minutes. The resolution text appears in the record for the meeting.
