Union Point council hears paving, events and public-works updates; tables property sale

At its Oct. 14 meeting, the Union Point City Council received a series of routine municipal updates and handled several noncontroversial items.
Clerk Becky Cronic reported that patching and paving work will continue in the coming weeks with Garrett Paving and the city's Public Works Department; T-SPLOST funds will cover the projects so general funds are not expected to be used. Public Works reported repairs to the ballfield on Universal Drive and reopening for public use. Utility/Public Works also installed speed bumps on Bloodworth Street at residents' request; resident Clarence Hillsman later used public comment to thank the council for placing the bumps.
Jill Rhodes of the Downtown Development Authority said the DDA hosted the Annual Junction Jog in coordination with Firefly Trail, Inc. on Sept. 27 with more than 125 participants, and the Story Walk along the Firefly Trail had a ribbon cutting on Oct. 11. Council Member Mary Mundy announced the Christmas Parade will be Dec. 13 and a Trunk or Treat is set for Oct. 25 at the Fire Station.
Clerk Cronic also presented a proposed FY2026 budget and scheduled a public hearing for Oct. 28 at noon at the Four Room Schoolhouse. Mayor Lanier Rhodes told the council a neighboring property owner expressed interest in the city-owned parcel at 807 Park Avenue; the council voted to table the item until the November meeting so members could review the property. The city also reported website updates by staff member Erica Rodriguez.
Animal Control Officer Wright reviewed monthly animal-control activity and announced a free vaccination and low-cost spay/neuter opportunity hosted by Lake Oconee Humane Society on Oct. 18 at the Fire Department. The meeting closed at 7:10 p.m. after a motion to adjourn by Council Member Sally Boswell.
