Turin mayor flags unsafe community building and urges engineer bids as planning vacancies remain

Mayor Sprouse raised concerns about the condition of the old community building and proposed staging remodels as part of future budget planning, but said the building had previously been ruled unsafe to occupy and that he has not seen an engineering report establishing its safety.
"We need all the items out of the building except what belongs to the Town," the mayor said and asked Attorney Mark Mitchell whether the town could require owners to remove property; Mitchell advised sending a registered letter setting a deadline for removal.
The council also reviewed planning and zoning oversight. Mayor Sprouse noted that recent construction has not followed town ordinances and that the town currently lacks both an engineer and a planning and zoning administrator; in their absence, the council acts as the administrator. The council reported two vacancies on the planning board and three applicants for those seats.
Mayor Sprouse said he has reached out to engineering firms and recommended hiring an engineer with multiple specialties; Council member Lydia Wallin asked that the town obtain three bids for engineering services.
No formal appointment or contract award was made at the work session; the council directed staff to pursue notices, solicit bids and evaluate applicants to fill planning-and-zoning vacancies.
