Klamath County commissioners approve several hires, authorize grant filing and OK ATV safety class site

Klamath Falls, Ore. — At its April 21, 2026 administrative meeting, the Klamath County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved multiple personnel hires, authorized a grant application and cleared county land for a spring youth all-terrain-vehicle (ATV) safety class.
The board approved a Step 4 hire for a position in the fairgrounds department after Human Resources’ Sue Baumgart and Fairgrounds representative Derrick Rowley presented the request. Commissioner DeGroot moved to approve and Commissioner Nichols seconded; the motion passed unanimously.
The board also approved a Public Works request to hire a heavy equipment operator. Human Resources and Public Works staff presented the request; Commissioner Nichols moved to approve, Commissioner DeGroot seconded and the board voted unanimously in favor.
Steve Lewis of the Sheriff’s Office requested permission to use the land behind the county Search and Rescue compound for spring youth ATV safety classes associated with a biennial Oregon State Parks and Recreation grant. Commissioner DeGroot moved to approve use of the site; Commissioner Nichols seconded and the motion passed unanimously, authorizing the classes at that location.
Finance staff Kieran Logan requested authorization to apply for the CAFFA grant; Logan said the application deadline is May 1. Commissioner DeGroot moved to approve filing the application and to authorize the board chair to sign; Commissioner Nichols seconded and the motion passed unanimously. The item will be placed on a future business meeting agenda as a previously approved action.
The board approved adding Doug Robertson, Executive Director of the Association of O&C Counties, as the county’s alternate representative on a Bureau of Land Management Resource Management Plan memorandum of understanding after Commissioner DeGroot proposed the appointment and Commissioner Nichols seconded the motion.
Commissioner DeGroot moved and Commissioner Nichols seconded a motion to sign a letter of support for the Town of Bonanza’s 2026 Small City Allotment grant application; the motion was approved unanimously.
