Union Point council hears DDA plans, renews five malt-beverage licenses and is told of upcoming fire-department audits

At the Jan. 14, 2025, meeting the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) chair reported new entry way signs and a DDA planning priority to highlight the Ogeechee River headwaters as a local attraction. Jill Rhodes said a Hancock County volunteer team that already organized around the river’s importance may be a partner on the effort.
City Clerk Becky Cronic reported the city mailed 2024 tax notices in December and that those taxes are due Feb. 17, 2025. She distributed the 2021 audit report and said the 2022 audit work will begin soon.
On business licensing, the council renewed five malt-beverage licenses for 2025 — Union Point Grocery and Deli; Short Stop; BP Market; The Point Market; and Jackson’s BBQ — in a unanimous vote after a motion by Council Member Teneisha Pinkney and a second by Council Member William Harris Jr.
Fire Department Chief Will Wright told the council the department will be audited soon by the Insurance Services Office (ISO) and that hydrant testing is planned for March; residents will be notified of exact testing dates via utility-bill mailings. There were no public comments. The council adjourned with a closing prayer.
