Council denies street‑renaming request for Bobbie Lynn Alexander; DDA schedules 5K/10K

The Union Point City Council unanimously denied a Request for Proposal to rename or designate a street near the homeplace of Bobbie Lynn Alexander at its Sept. 9 meeting.
Mayor Lanier Rhodes introduced the RFP submitted earlier by Orlando Mapp. Council Member William Harris moved to deny the request; Council Member Jim Scott seconded. Harris said he had concerns about parity for others who might seek similar recognition and the time needed to review requests; City Attorney Joe Reitman raised potential emergency-response confusion from multiple or duplicate street names. The motion passed unanimously.
Separately, Sherley Selman, speaking for the Downtown Development Authority, updated the council on a planned race. The DDA will hold a 5K and a newly added 10K on Sept. 27 beginning at 8:30 a.m.; Selman said there were about 100 runners registered at the time of the meeting and that sponsorships were still being secured. Funds raised will support DDA activities.
Council Member Sally Boswell suggested the Alexander family consider honoring Bobbie Lynn Alexander through the local school system rather than renaming a street; that option was noted during discussion.
No formal vote or direction on alternative recognitions was recorded beyond the denial of the street‑renaming RFP.
