New Hyde Park board recognizes junior firefighters, approves hires and parking changes

The Village of New Hyde Park Board of Trustees opened its Sept. 19 meeting by recognizing the New Hyde Park Junior Fire Department and presenting Certificates of Recognition to 83 junior firefighters for being named New York State Youth Group of the Year, Mayor Christopher Devane said.
The board then moved through routine business and a slate of resolutions. Deputy Mayor Madhvi Nijjar moved to authorize Abstract No. 24-08; Trustee Eve Sheikh seconded the motion and it was unanimously approved. The board also unanimously approved resolution 24-42 converting part-time laborer James Powers to full time in the Department of Public Works, and resolution 24-43 hiring Ryan McNeely as a new part-time DPW laborer. Deputy Mayor Nijjar moved 24-44 to amend parking time limits on Brooklyn Avenue, seconded by Trustee Rainer Burger; that motion passed unanimously. The board approved resolution 24-45 authorizing the mayor to enter into an agreement with Alfredo’s Construction to reseal and restripe the Village Hall parking lot, again on a unanimous vote.
Why this matters: the personnel changes affect DPW staffing levels and on-the-ground services such as street maintenance and snow removal, while the parking-time amendment and parking-lot work will directly change how residents and visitors use village parking near municipal facilities. The unanimous votes indicate consensus among trustees on these operational items.
In his remarks Mayor Devane also thanked staff and volunteers involved in recent community events and operations, including the DPW crew’s work preparing for the Street Fair and the team that supported the Wall of Heroes dedication at Memorial Park. Clerk-Treasurer Rebecca Sheehan provided a routine financial update, listing revenue line items and noting outstanding tax payments as of Aug. 15, 2024 ($527,853), and reported on grant awards including an $18,885 Justice Court Assistance Program (JCAP) allocation used for court chairs, shelving and an upgraded audio/visual system in the courtroom.
The meeting recessed into executive session at 8:31 p.m.; the session concluded at 9:00 p.m.
The board’s immediate next steps include implementing the approved parking changes, proceeding with the parking-lot contract, and onboarding the new DPW hires. Additional agenda items — including DPW renovation timelines and capital project bids — are expected at upcoming meetings.
