Morgantown council approves Town Hall fire repairs, insurance settlement and mortgage closing

A fire in the ceiling of the new Morgantown Town Hall meeting room prompted the council on Oct. 13 to approve repairs, accept an insurance settlement and document a mortgage closing for the project.
Council President Joe Blevins reported that the insurance company settled the claim for $26,000; the town is responsible for a $1,000 deductible. Council member Jewel Blevins moved to pay the deductible to Rose Construction for repair work on ceiling beams and related fire damage; Stacie Baker seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
Rose Construction submitted a Pay Application for $58,893.26 for work on the Town Hall remodel; Jeremy Baker moved to approve that pay application, Stacie Baker seconded, and the council voted to pay the invoice.
Council also approved purchasing replacement data wiring destroyed in the blaze. Town President Joe Blevins and Clerk Treasurer Sharon McIntosh closed the Town Hall mortgage loan with Peoples Bank, documenting a $235,000 loan for a 10-year term at 4.550 percent.
Why it matters The fire interrupted completion of the new Town Hall and required coordination among the town, contractor and insurer. Approving the deductible payment and contractor invoice allows repairs to proceed; the mortgage closing secures financing for the project’s remaining work.
Next steps The council authorized replacement wiring purchases and will oversee repair work with Rose Construction. Additional contractor invoices and insurance paperwork will be processed in future meetings.
