Western Wayne trustees approve 2025-26 calendar, policy changes and accept superintendent resignation

WESTERN WAYNE, April 24, 2025 — The Western Wayne Board of School Trustees voted unanimously Thursday evening to approve the district's 2025-26 school calendar, adopt the second reading of policy A275R (School Wellness), ratify a work-based learning memorandum of understanding and approve several personnel and contractual items, while also accepting a number of resignations and retirements.
On a motion by Jenni Risch, seconded by Phil Pflum, the board approved the 2025-26 calendar. The board then approved the second reading of policy A275R on school wellness on a motion by Brent Fortman, seconded by Risch. Each measure passed on recorded 4-0 votes.
The board approved a Work-Based Learning MOU with the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce and Wayne County Schools (motion by Phil Pflum, seconded by Brent Fortman) and accepted an updated contract for the district's Assistant Director of Technology, Jordan Scruggs (moved by Brent Fortman, seconded by Jenni Risch). The Student Government field trip to Kings Island and a slate of donations to student programs'including FFA, archery, BPA, prom and Farewell Fest'were also accepted by unanimous vote.
Trustees approved non-certified hires including Fayth Koontz as middle-school agriculture teacher for the remainder of the year and Gavin Trent as a special education instructional aide. The board also approved three volunteer middle-school track coaches: Alyssa Hood, Hannah Best and Michael Munchel.
The board accepted resignations from board member Dave Sturgis and from staff members Andy Stover (Superintendent), Matt Davis (LMHS assistant principal) and Hannah Johns (fourth-grade teacher). It also accepted retirements from Stacey Bertsch (kindergarten teacher, 31 years) and Kim Pattison (corporate school nurse, 20 years). All personnel motions were moved and seconded as recorded and carried 4-0.
Financial reports presented to the board showed an Educational Fund balance of $1,528,283.44 and an Operations Fund balance of $418,760.44. The receipts list included state reimbursements (school lunch, basic grant, Title I, SIG Next GEN and others), a local option tax deposit and various grants and donations.
The meeting concluded after board comments reaffirming the trustees' commitment to the corporation and a motion to adjourn, which carried 4-0. The board did not announce a timetable for filling the superintendent or assistant principal positions during the meeting.
