County presents NAZTrails project to Tusayan; Tusayan and Montane loops highlighted

Coconino County Parks and Recreation staff briefed the Tusayan Town Council April 14 on the NAZTrails initiative, a regional effort to market and map existing trails across northern Arizona.
Liz Krug, identified as Assistant Director of Coconino County Parks and Recreation, and Director Cynthia Nemeth joined the meeting via Teams and described project elements including an interactive website (naztrails.org), GIS-enabled downloadable maps, brochures and coordination with land managers to secure approvals for listed trails and features. Krug said the project’s initial funding was grant-based and is currently expended; she described how listed features on mapped areas that lie on Navajo Nation direct users to the Nation’s Parks and Recreation site for guides or backcountry permit information.
Town Manager Clifton said the timing is useful for Tusayan because "the two new trails have been completed - the Tusayan and Montane loops," and he noted Phase 11 would fund trailheads, signage and other amenities if state review and funding move forward. The council expressed support for the outreach and the project’s potential to provide visitor information without creating new trail infrastructure beyond what local managers approve.
