Enumclaw opens public hearings and gives first reading to two zoning amendments

Enumclaw — At its May 26 meeting, the Enumclaw City Council opened public hearings and provided first readings for two proposed municipal code amendments.
Senior Planner Winston Larson (S9) summarized Ordinance 28-37 as an amendment to the Enumclaw municipal code to reduce minimum side yard setbacks in the airport zoning district from 20 feet to 10 feet and to adjust maximum building heights where the airport zoning district abuts residential zones, keeping accessory-structure-like height allowances near residences. The Planning Commission recommended approval on April 23, 2026; staff recommended first reading and the hearing was closed after no public comment.
The council then opened and closed the public hearing for Ordinance 28-38, which would add or clarify permitted uses in commercial and light industrial zoning districts, such as arts and vocational schools, gym/fitness centers, health studios and animal shelter/daycare/boarding uses, and would establish standards for animal care operations including pens/kennels, setbacks from residential zones and waste-disposal requirements. Staff told council the changes are intended to align the zoning code with the 2024 comprehensive plan and to address compatibility concerns. The planning commission recommended approval following its review.
Both items were given first readings and will return for further consideration in subsequent proceedings.
