Poseyville moves forward on gas billing changes and reports progress on wastewater and drinking water

Poseyville officials directed staff to prepare ordinance language to update the gas utility billing system and heard updates on wastewater and drinking water at the Aug. 14 council meeting.
Utility Superintendent Jeremy Farrar and Clerk-Treasurer Jodie Rankin summarized a gas study presented by USDI representative Darin Houchins. The study recommends replacing the long-standing quarterly tracker with a monthly gas tracker and adding facility charges and transportation fees so the utility can cover operational costs and set aside funds for future upgrades and maintenance. Rankin said USDI will provide a draft ordinance and the council unanimously agreed to proceed with a first reading in September.
Farrar and Council President Justin Rutledge also reported the wastewater treatment upgrades tied to the high school project are moving forward with the IFA, USDA and partner agencies; the town’s accountant is awaiting final numbers to complete the rate study. Farrar addressed resident concerns about nitrates in drinking water, noting that the town mailed the 2024 Drinking Water Quality Report to customers, has had 15 consecutive months of good test results, and will post a summary on Facebook to reassure the public.
No final decisions on gas tariff structure or wastewater rates were adopted at the meeting; ordinance drafting and the rate study are the next steps.
