Select Board to countersign RSU 21 warrant and shortens nomination period for one director vacancy

At the Feb. 24 meeting the Select Board reviewed nomination-paper availability for municipal and RSU 21 offices and countersigned the RSU 21 Warrant and Notice for the June 9, 2026 Budget Validation Referendum as required by state law.
Town Clerk Merton Brown said nomination papers for Select Board seats, RSU 21 directors and various utility trustees will be available Feb. 27 with a filing deadline of April 10 for regular positions. For a one-year RSU 21 director vacancy created by the resignation of Abigail Spadone effective April 1, the clerk recommended a shortened nomination period with papers available April 3 and due April 15, meeting the requirements of 30-A M.R.S.A. 32528(4)(E).
The board voted 7-0 to issue the Notice of Shortened Nomination Period for the one-year vacancy and to countersign the RSU 21 warrant; the clerk clarified that candidates must file separate nomination papers for separate positions and noted write-in options and appointment procedures if a candidate wins multiple positions.
The clerk also reminded the board that the Select Board is obligated by state law to sign the warrant whether or not members endorse the school budget.
Next steps: Nomination papers will be available on the stated dates; ballots for absentee voting will be ordered so deadlines cannot be extended past the dates set by the clerk.
