Town manager says pool opening delayed after motor ‘blew up’; repairs ongoing

Town Manager Vernon Batty told the Pima Town Council on June 10 that the municipal pool’s motor “blew up” on May 23, 2025, the day the town had planned to open for summer season. A replacement motor was purchased from California and installed, but Batty said crews discovered other issues that must be repaired before reopening.
Public Works Director E. Stringfellow told the council his department has focused on pool repairs while also completing chip sealing, hiring seasonal staff and installing new park sprinklers. Stringfellow said the department bought a robotic pool cleaner, which has “helped tremendously,” and a new tire machine for maintenance work.
Councilmember Lucas Hoopes raised concerns about supervision of seasonal employees; Stringfellow said he had explained duties and expectations and is monitoring staff performance.
Manager Batty also reported separate but related facilities work: the Town Hall roof replacement by Ferrin’s Roofing has been completed, Bowman is producing engineered plans for sewer work and a lift station tied to the new high school access, and funding exists for park development near the baseball fields while Memorial Park remains a priority.
No formal action or funding appropriation for the pool repair was recorded at the meeting. Batty said grant applications are in progress for the road to the new high school and that council directed staff to clarify grant line items in the forthcoming budget documents.
The council did not set a reopening date; staff continue repairs and monitoring.
