Broken Bow council approves hires, contracts and park upgrades in routine June session

The Broken Bow City Council on June 24 approved several routine items including a police hire, a library roof contract, park upgrades and administrative forms.
Council voted to appoint Wyatt Woodward as a Broken Bow Police Officer after Police Chief Steve Scott described Woodward as a Broken Bow native and a 2025 graduate of Peru State College with a bachelor’s in criminal justice and administration. City Attorney Jason White administered the Police Officer Oath following the council’s unanimous approval (Smith, Kleeb, Wamsley voted aye).
The council also approved a Broken Bow Public Library Volunteer Release and Waiver of Liability after Library Director Megan Svoboda said the policy shields the city from liability except in cases of gross negligence; City Attorney White had reviewed and recommended the form.
Administrator David Schmidt presented two bids for the library roof and recommended accepting Weathercraft Roofing’s $35,150 bid over Spartan Commercial Roofing’s $63,856 bid; JEO reviewed and also recommended Weathercraft. The council voted to award the contract to Weathercraft unanimously.
Resident Ethan Harders told the council he had raised sufficient funds to replace baskets and signage and to convert the city’s frisbee golf course to a user-friendly 18-hole layout; Mayor Rod Sonnichsen recommended approval and offered to coordinate city assistance for removal and installation with Darren Marten. The council approved the upgrades by unanimous vote.
Councilmembers approved signing the substantial completion form for the Eagle Crest subdivision based on JEO’s recommendation. The motion passed with Councilmembers Smith and Kleeb voting aye and Councilmember Wamsley recorded as abstaining.
The consent agenda, which included approval of the June 11 minutes and the Bills to Date, was approved by unanimous roll call. The documents presented listed a Grand Total of $221,469.44 (Bi-Weekly Payroll $92,284.22; other bills totaling $129,185.22).
