Residents urge city to act on extreme heat: cooling centers, communications and quick steps

Several residents and coalition representatives urged the commission to take low‑cost, near‑term steps to protect vulnerable residents from extreme heat.

Glen Craig and Sarah Flint outlined a coalition of local volunteers, county health staff and nonprofit groups and asked the city to centralize heat‑index data on its website, identify cooling and hydration centers (libraries and public facilities were suggested), and consider installing water‑bottle fillers and misting systems at public restrooms to reduce heat exposure. "Protecting residents and visitors from extreme heat is the right thing to do," Flint said, and she noted local emergency‑room visits for heat emergencies during recent months.

Vice mayor and staff said the city will explore the feasibility of hot‑day shelters and coordinate with parks, recreation and nonprofit partners. Staff noted existing cold‑weather shelter models and said they would examine whether the city can trigger hot‑day facilities when forecasts indicate dangerous conditions.
