Bolton Fire Commission reviews 44 calls, seeks Aqua1 grant after three drownings

The Bolton Fire Commission met Feb. 24 at the Bolton Fire House and received department updates on emergency responses, equipment, and grant activity.
Fire Chief Bruce Dixon told commissioners the department responded to 44 emergency calls since the last meeting, including three motor vehicle accidents and a chimney fire. Dixon said a road race is scheduled at Bolton High School in two weeks and a polar plunge is set for March 15, 2025. He reported that the town administrator requested pricing and specifications for a Polaris Ranger UTV; Dixon provided that information and "was able to save the town approximately $20,000," and the vehicle will be delivered once the town issues payment and the department completes its inspection.
Dixon also reported that the Bolton Volunteer Fire Department Inc. applied for an Aqua1 grant to buy underwater locating equipment priced at $5,995. He said the application followed three drownings at Bolton Lake in the last year and that the equipment would help members locate submerged victims. Dixon added the department is awaiting decisions on a FEMA grant and replacement radios.
Deputy Bolton Fire Chief Matthew Perreira reviewed recent emergency responses, noting the chimney fire required CPR and other responses included a vehicle versus wires incident on Camp Meeting Road, a rollover on Route 384 and an accident on Bolton Center Road. Perreira also reported that apparatus ET134 is operational.
Fire Marshal Bill Call summarized inspection activity and follow-ups, including further investigation and a fire report for Dean Cabinetry, re-inspections at Parkside Pizza and Country Liquors, a completed inspection at Dollar General, and follow-up work at England Hardware Plaza Package Store.
The commission approved the minutes from the Jan. 27 meeting and heard a brief finance update that the phone bill has been paid; a full financial report is scheduled for March. The meeting was adjourned at 7:15 P.M. The commission's next meeting is scheduled for March 24, 2025.
