The operations committee moved and approved a recommendation to the full board to name the Hilton Head Island High School lacrosse field in honor of Joe Monmonier.
A community representative who spoke on behalf of the request described Monmonier's long tenure with the school and his reputation across the state, noting his service as athletic director for more than a decade and earlier years as a lacrosse coach. “He was a big part of our school community here…he was, you know, an advocate for all the students here and, great steward of the taxpayers money,” a speaker in support said.
Committee members who attended the SIC meeting and who know Monmonier also spoke in support, calling the proposed naming “touching” and noting positive community reaction. A motion recommending the naming to the full board was made, seconded, and carried by voice vote; staff recorded the motion as carried and said the matter will be forwarded to the board for final action.
Next steps: The naming recommendation will be placed on the full school board agenda for formal approval.
