Council approves West Park rental for Topeka Together market; discusses using recovered rental funds for fireworks

The Topeka Town Council approved a West Park rental for the Topeka Together Farmer's Market on Thursdays from May 8 through Oct. 9, 2025, setting the 2025 rental rate at $25. The motion, moved by Justin Geigley, passed with Council Vice President Steve Schrock recorded as voting no.
During the same meeting the council acknowledged a commitment from Marcus Fry, previously the diamond rentals and men's league manager, to repay $15,200 to the town by April 22, 2025 for outstanding diamond rental charges. Council members also noted an outstanding Pepsi bill and other bills in Fry's name. Council Member Ray Folk proposed reserving some of the recovered funds to pay for fireworks for the Topeka Together event, but the town attorney advised receiving the payment first before allocating funds.
Harold Gingerich, an attendee, asked that 'Keep Off' signs be posted at the new West Park ball diamonds because children were on the fields and raised safety and visibility concerns about a new building on Main Street. Town Attorney Bill Eberhard and Town Manager Stewart Bender said they would contact county officials about zoning and screening questions for the building.
The market reservation and the repayment acknowledgement were approved; the council said any reallocation of recovered funds for fireworks would await confirmation that the repayment had been received.
