Police chief reports staffing shortfall, to pursue one part-time hire

Police Chief David Pernice told the Union City Borough Council on Aug. 27 that a new hire previously approved by the borough has not responded to outreach and that he will assume the candidate is no longer interested.
Pernice said there are 32 candidates on the hiring consortium list and that he would like to hire two part-time officers, although the council has approved funding for only one. He said he will contact the consortium, check with the Civil Service Commission to schedule oral exams and send letters to prospective candidates.
Council agreed to proceed with searching for one part-time officer, per the meeting record. No public commenters spoke during the meeting.
The council adjourned at 6:19 P.M.
