Union City approves moving forward with Broadband Ready Communities designation

Union City Borough Council voted July 9 to proceed with the process to pursue a Broadband Ready Communities designation and to authorize the Erie Area Council of Governments (EACOG) to serve as the borough’s Municipal Broadband Champion.
Manager Cindy Wells told council the designation creates an opportunity for additional internet service providers to consider entering the borough and that existing permitting requirements align with the program’s recommendations. The borough is required to hold a public meeting stating the resolution will be passed; council approved proceeding with that process and with the resolution application.
The motion to proceed was moved by Councilor Kerns, seconded by Councilor Joyce, and carried unanimously. Council did not specify funding commitments in the minutes; staff will work with EACOG to schedule the public meeting and prepare the resolution and application materials.
