Union City Borough Council on July 9 approved the retroactive appointment of Mark Zigler as the borough’s Code Enforcement Officer and delayed action on a recommended full-time police hire.
The Personnel Committee recommended Mark Zigler following an interview. Council approved a retroactive appointment allowing Zigler to begin training July 12 on the iWorqs software and to start performing work on July 29; the motion carried but Councilor Uber recorded opposition, citing a residency concern.
Separately, Police Chief David Pernice told council that candidate Kenneth Fye had passed civil service testing and a background check and recommended hiring him as a full-time officer. A motion to hire Fye, moved by Councilor Steadman, failed for lack of a second and therefore died; the minutes record that the council will revisit the hire at a future meeting. Chief Pernice asked why the motion failed so he could advise the applicant.
Council did not change pay, start dates, or additional conditions in the minutes; manager and personnel committee follow-up was recorded to complete onboarding steps for Zigler and to revisit the police hire at a later meeting.
