Lumpkin council approves employee insurance policy language, bonuses and promotion; discusses parade and local issues

The City of Lumpkin council on Nov. 12, 2024, approved updates to its employee insurance policy language, authorized holiday bonuses for employees, and promoted a staff member to public works supervision.
Under discussion following passage of HB 451, the council noted county insurance will cover the fire department while the city must provide police officer coverage effective Jan. 1, 2025. Clerk Anne Holloway asked that the Policy and Procedure Manual state that the city will pay 80% of employees' health insurance and that employees will pay 20%; dental, vision, accident and life insurance will be provided after 90 days. Councilmember B. Cullefer moved to add the statement to the manual and Councilmember M. House seconded; the motion carried 6-0.
The council approved holiday bonuses of $50 for full-time employees and $25 for part-time employees. The body also voted to promote Makeema Robertson to Public Works supervisor, effective Jan. 1, 2025, at a starting hourly rate of $21.00; the promotion will be reviewed after a 90-day probationary period.
Other items: the council approved the 2025 holiday schedule and set regular 2025 council meetings for the second Tuesday of each month. The clerk reported the city was approved for the LMIG 2025 grant. During public comment the council heard a request from resident Bernard Simmons for a streetlight on Main Street; the clerk said Georgia Power had been contacted previously and the council agreed to look into the matter. The mayor asked the police chief to consider logistics for the Dec. 6 Christmas parade, including temporarily closing the east and west sides of the courthouse square and locating a Christmas tree.
