Council discusses raising trash administration fee to $3.71, refers matter for more data

During the City Manager’s report, Sonny Lewis told Council the trash administration fee—currently $2.71—has not increased in 12 years and proposed raising it to $3.71 to address budget pressures in the solid-waste fund and to add the fee to the city's cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) schedule so it would increase gradually in future years.
Councilmembers discussed the timing of an increase amid the pandemic and the need for additional data. Mrs. Debbie Fouts said implementing an increase now would be difficult for residents; Vice Mayor Todd Hall suggested incremental increases before adding the fee to COLA. Mr. Mathew Wilcher and Mr. Michael Aldridge asked for comparisons with neighboring communities and recommended the Finance Committee review and bring a recommendation to Council.
Mr. Lewis said he would gather comparative administrative-fee data from other cities and return with options; Council did not take formal action at this meeting.
