Board hears proposed state education funding items including vision screenings and literacy coaches

Slaven listed several funding proposals that lawmakers may consider before the biennial budget is finalized: $50 million for the "Ohio C" kindergarten–third-grade vision screening program (to support eye exams and glasses), $30 million for a school bus safety working group, $12 million for Science of Reading literacy coaches, $10 million for a Principal Apprentice Program, and $7 million for planning and workforce initiatives including driver training and high school grants. Slaven said he hopes some of those proposals will survive the budget process.
Earlier in the meeting Superintendent Mr. Heflinger observed that the governor has proposed a new budget and that the House and Senate will develop their versions ahead of the June 30 deadline. He said updated district policies will be presented next month to reflect late 2024 legislation.
The board did not take formal action on the budget items; Slaven presented them as items to watch in the legislative process.
