Staff asks council authorization to notify ~500-foot radius for De Anza Trail designation; committee offers history and route options

Staff asked the committee to help assemble history and maps for a De Anza Trail designation and sought authorization from the city council to notify property owners within 500 feet (an estimated ~1,000 notices) ahead of a public hearing.
Asa, speaking for staff, told the committee the De Anza Trail designation will require a public hearing and that the city council must authorize notifications to property owners near the route.
“As part of the designation … we would require one public hearing and then also … we would need authorization to notify residents,” Asa said, and estimated notices would extend roughly 500 feet from the route, possibly reaching about 1,000 properties. Asa and committee members discussed two route options: one flatter alignment that runs along major thoroughfares and another steeper route that some members said would be less logical in context of neighboring jurisdictions.
Staff asked the Pathways Committee to help prepare a staff report with timeline notes, previous site walks, and the ad hoc committee’s notes for the council packet. Committee members agreed to pass along Nick’s PowerPoint and other materials to help the staff report and to coordinate on maps for the two options.
Why it matters: The designation could change signage and the official regional-trail mapping and requires public outreach and a formal council public hearing. The scale of notifications and the need to coordinate with neighboring jurisdictions means staff workload and outreach are nontrivial.
What’s next: If the council authorizes notices in June, staff said a public hearing could be scheduled at the August city council meeting; the committee will provide historical notes and maps to support the staff report.
