Gambier swears in council, elects Morgan Giles president and reshuffles committees

Mayor Leeman Kessler presided over the Village of Gambier’s reorganizational meeting on Jan. 5, when he swore in newly seated councilmembers Elizabeth (Liz) Forman, Calvin Murphy, Alec Wood and Philip (Phil) Brooks for four-year terms beginning Jan. 1, 2026.
At the meeting, council nominated and unanimously elected Morgan Giles as Council President for 2026; Councilmember Liz Forman made the nomination and Alec Wood seconded. Giles accepted the appointment and will serve as the council’s presiding member for the year.
Council also confirmed committee assignments for 2026, naming chairs and members for Buildings & Grounds; Streets & Utilities; Communication & Technology; Public Safety & Personnel; Finance & Income Tax; and Library, Programming & Events. The council reviewed the 2026 village calendar and approved two administrative changes: converting the current half-day staff holidays on Dec. 24 and Dec. 31 to full days off, and moving recycling pickup dates that fall on those holidays to earlier in the week so residents are not without service for two consecutive weeks.
The reorganizational meeting adjourned at 7:01 p.m. The council then reconvened for its regular meeting at 7:02 p.m.
