Parks and recreation staff (speaker 6) told the board that 40-passenger electric buses are expensive and face range limitations — citing a 40-passenger electric model with an estimated purchase price of about $600,000 and a range of roughly 100 miles on a full charge. The staff recommended prioritizing parking-lot improvements and EV charging infrastructure in the CDBG bid to make an electric bus feasible later.
"The electric bus that we did find, 40 passenger, 600,000...and the range, totally empty, would only be a 100 miles," the staff member said, noting that routes that include a roughly 40-mile trip to the city could push range limits.
Board members discussed alternatives: one option is to use the $200,000 already in the capital budget to buy a conventional bus now while pursuing grants and credits (for example through Sustainable Westchester) to add funds for an electric vehicle later. The Supervisor (speaker 2) said keeping the $200,000 in the budget would allow the town to pursue grant matching and potentially reach $400,000 toward a bus purchase.
Members also emphasized safety and accessibility: staff highlighted parking-lot flood mitigation and leveling work that would both improve senior safety and create the infrastructure to support charging equipment. The board directed staff to proceed with the CDBG submission that prioritizes parking-lot work and to present bus procurement options at the upcoming meeting.
No formal vote on purchase was recorded at the work session; the decision was a budget-direction and a request for staff to continue grant-seeking and to include parking-lot repairs in the CDBG application.
