Civic Center receives $1,000 dividend and donated refurbishment work; council addresses downtown paving and park electrical damage

Patty Schwalm, president of the Civic Center Board, told the council the Civic Center had received its first annuity dividend of $1,000 from the Henry County Community Foundation and that Josh Anderson of FAB-A-CAB offered donated labor and materials to repaint and refurbish parts of the building on Wednesday, July 17.

Schwalm said she is replacing the front curtains and asked the council to create an ordinance to manage the Civic Center effective Jan. 1, 2020. The council did not record a vote on creating that ordinance in these minutes, but the request was entered into the record.

Town Supervisor Carl Spears said recent downtown paving had been premature according to BFS engineers and that some pavement will need to be removed to allow placement of new curbs 12 inches below the surface; he also reported two downtown light poles require replacement because of rust, and he noted an inability to replace the traditional downtown Christmas lights because incandescent bulbs are no longer available.

Dick Schwalm reported considerable damage to electrical equipment at Dietrich Park caused by an unlicensed electrician during the Lion’s Club Fair. The council decided to notify the Lion’s Club that future fair-related electrical work must be performed by a licensed electrician.

The minutes record the donated Civic Center work and the council’s direction to notify the Lion’s Club about electrician licensing; no funding decisions or ordinance enactments appear in these minutes for the Civic Center management request.
