FEMA grant will fund most of Long Beach police’s new boat; town must provide 25% match

The Town of Long Beach Police Department has been awarded a FEMA Port Security grant totaling $227,281.20 to replace or add a police boat, Chief Mark J. Swistek reported at the commission’s quarterly meeting.
Swistek said FEMA will provide $170,460.90 (75% of the award) and the town must supply a 25% local match of $56,820.30. The department will be reimbursed $1,500 for part of the cost to hire Lexipol to assist with the grant application; Lexipol was paid $4,000 from the police donation account to help prepare the submission, Swistek said. The department plans to order the vessel from vendor FLUID in January and anticipates receipt in March or April 2026. The Michigan City Port Authority has agreed to provide a 30-foot slip at no cost from May through September, and the department has raised more than $48,000 in donations toward the required match.
Swistek said the new boat will be stored at the Public Safety Building during winter months. The minutes do not show a formal commission vote to accept the grant; the announcement was recorded as part of the department’s new business updates. The commission did not record additional funding action or a formal council appropriation in the minutes; Town Council approval may be required for any budget changes related to the match or capital acquisition.
