Long Beach commission recommends three license-plate-reader cameras to Town Council

The Town of Long Beach commission voted to recommend that the Town Council approve installation of three Flock license-plate-reader (LPR) cameras at main entry points into town.
Chief Mark J. Swistek described the plan and said the cameras would be placed on Chasleton Drive south of Fairway, Moore Road south of Mt. Claire and Moore Road at Lakeshore Drive. He told the commission the system records images of vehicles and plate numbers, retains data for 30 days (longer by request), and can alert officers if a vehicle on a national hot list passes a camera. Each camera carries an annual cost of about $4,000, Swistek said. The commission voted 3-0 to recommend the installation to the Town Council; Commissioner John Kocher made the motion and Commissioner Colleen Lane seconded it.
The recommendation is advisory; the Town Council must approve procurement and budget authority. Swistek noted nearby agencies operate extensive LPR networks, including the Michigan City Police Department and the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department, and said the town would seek vendor quotes before presenting the matter to council.
The commission record does not include text of a final procurement contract or a Town Council vote on vendor selection. Next procedural steps are a council review of the recommendation and any vendor quotes and budget approvals required for equipment purchase and installation.
