At the Feb. 9 Washington City Council meeting members unanimously authorized City Administrator Will Long to execute the city's 2023 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) contract for water infrastructure. The motion to grant execution authority was made by Councilman Larry Hill, seconded by Councilman Newton Gunter, and passed with no dissent.
Council members also received a status update on the Andrew Drive pipe replacement project. City staff reported the replacement of a collapsed 15-foot pipe with two 7-foot pipes and said the work was completed within the grant funding timeframe. City staff said the site is safe but the road surface requires inspection; the city will retain an independent company to perform that inspection and to review safety measures for steep drop-offs along the roadway.
The council voted 5–1 to fund a videography project by the Black History Committee to preserve local oral histories. Councilwoman Kimberly J. Rainey moved the funding approval, seconded by Councilman Calvin J. Wiggs, III; Councilman Larry Hill cast the lone no vote.
