Property owners Ellen and Richard Jones told the commission the house was in very poor condition when they purchased it and suffered additional damage from Hurricane Helene; they said part of the rear is "leaning" and that cost estimates to restore the building were prohibitive. The Joneses said they own the adjacent building at 211 E. 7th Street and plan to use the lot created by demolition for parking to support a business there.
Downtown Development Director Don Lively said he inspected the property and concurred that the structure is essentially beyond repair. After discussion and questions, Commissioner Rex Gerlinger moved to approve the demolition request; Commissioner Steve Nix seconded and the motion passed as recorded in the minutes.
