DNR: West Dennis Beach vehicle closures for piping plover nesting; public meeting set on shoreline management

The Town Administrator relayed that the Department of Natural Resources closed the western portion of the West Dennis Beach parking lot to vehicles beginning Friday, June 12 because of piping plover nesting; pedestrian access remains allowed and the area will reopen when the plovers have fledged.
The administrator said the temporary vehicle closure was intended to protect nesting birds while allowing the greatest possible public access elsewhere on the beach. "This area will reopen when all the plovers in the area have fledged," the Town Administrator said, and thanked the public for their patience.
The administrator also announced a public presentation scheduled for June 17 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Dennis Police Community Room on an intermunicipal shoreline-management Phase 2 project for southeastern Cape Cod Bay. The project, the administrator said, is grant-funded by the Office of Coastal Zone Management and includes the towns of Brewster, Orleans and Dennis to pursue a regional approach to shoreline management along roughly 14.5 miles of shoreline.
The administrator encouraged the public to attend the meeting and review posted materials on the planning department's website for background information.
