Township authority weighs smaller sewer plant after consultant scales proposal

Lower Pottsgrove Township officials said the township authority is moving away from an earlier, larger wastewater treatment concept and is considering a smaller plant that would lower projected capital costs.
Edward C. Wagner said consultant Fred Ebert of Ebert Engineering presented an initial nine-million-gallon concept, but the Authority was not in favor of building to that worst-case size. Ebert will scale the proposal back to approximately 3.1 million gallons; Wagner said that would substantially reduce the estimated price from figures discussed previously (the larger concept had been discussed at roughly $19 million).
Wagner noted the township’s current average daily flow is about 1.2 to 1.3 million gallons, so a 3.1-million-gallon facility would be roughly double current average usage. The Authority will review operations numbers and is expected to decide in September whether to proceed.
If the Authority moves forward with design, the township anticipates additional engineering submissions to PennDOT and phased procurement; funding sources and precise cost estimates were not specified at the meeting.
