Council amends polling-sites ordinance, keeps two districts at Northview School

The Waukesha Common Council on Nov. 18 approved amendments to the city's polling-location ordinance to consolidate sites and support use of Badger books electronic poll books, while agreeing to an amendment that leaves Districts 4 and 13 at Northview School.
Ordinance and licensing staff member Katie described a multi-month review that considered ADA compliance, available space, power and set-up needs for the electronic poll books. "The proposed changes would save the city approximately $69,000 during the four-year election cycle," Katie said, adding that Badger books lets voters use any poll book and can speed lines on Election Day.
Council members discussed maintaining voter convenience versus cost savings. Alderperson Piper moved to suspend the rules and amend the ordinance so Districts 4 and 13 remain at Northview School; the council first voted to suspend the three-reading rule, then approved the ordinance with that amendment. The suspension carried unanimously and the final ordinance passed 11–2 after debate over consolidation and consistency for voters who have used Northview in prior elections.
The ordinance updates polling locations, prioritizes ADA-compliant sites and lays out logistics for Badger books implementation; staff said attachments and the ordinance language will be coordinated administratively as needed.
