River Ridge discusses multi-agency storm surge resilience plan after hurricane impacts

Eric Long, PSGRC general manager, told the River Ridge CDD on Oct. 22 that storm surge impacts have increased and Pelican Sound is developing a five- to ten-year resilience action plan. He proposed forming an advisory/review panel and asked the CDD to designate a board representative and staff or engineering representative to help coordinate with other agencies when needed.
Long described a hypothetical scenario based on topographic mapping that a 10 to 12-foot storm surge could have caused flooding to approximately 45% to 55% of the community in a prior event. He said that 3-foot storm panels would be inadequate for that level of surge and that addressing the issue could take a decade and require coordination with state, county and village authorities and potential partnerships with neighboring jurisdictions such as West Bay.
The board reached a consensus to have Mr. Long and newly appointed Mr. Keith Merrill assist with the initiative; Mr. Krebs was authorized to assist as necessary. Mr. Pires noted the Army Corps of Engineers has presented ideas in Collier County should funding become available.
The discussion focused on long-range planning, intergovernmental coordination and identifying funding and technical options; no formal obligation or funding commitment from the CDD was recorded at the meeting.
