Students spotlighted: Science Olympiad advances to state, music and leadership awards recognized

Student representatives and school staff presented a range of recent achievements during the Feb. 12, 2020 MSD of New Durham Township School Board meeting, including Science Olympiad teams advancing to the state competition, choir and band solo/ensemble successes, and recognition of students and staff.
Elementary student council representatives Alexandria Clayton and Phoebe Currin opened the elementary Good News report and listed activities and clubs for February, including Camp Invention registration, the Kid’s Heart Challenge, ASAP afterschool assistance, and several clubs and athletic updates. The board heard that Louis Mendez would represent Westville Elementary in the LaPorte County Spelling Bee and that talent-show auditions and the fourth-grade science fair were scheduled later in the month.
Middle and high school Good News included PCC week results, a middle-school spelling-bee winner (Chase Lowry), choir and solo/ensemble participants earning gold and silver medals, and band students advancing to state competition. Board members recognized Mrs. Williams as Teacher of the Month for February (Mrs. Williams was unable to attend due to weather). Both Science Olympiad teams qualified for the state meet in March following regional competition at PNW–Hammond.
