Sugar Grove police chief reports equipment and maintenance needs, shares monthly activity

Police Chief Jason Costlow presented the department’s monthly activity report at the Village of Sugar Grove council meeting on Aug. 19 and raised a series of operational and maintenance issues.
Costlow said he located an older department patch and plans to place it on new uniforms. He reviewed patrol activity and counts for the reporting period, noting traffic stops, warnings, and one arrest among other entries in the monthly report.
The chief flagged equipment and facility concerns: the status of the department’s “white cruiser” was queried; a speed sign that last worked in 2020 will not power on despite charged batteries; the concession-stand breaker repeatedly trips and has caused loss of camera feeds; and the police garage requires repairs for which the chief provided a quote (attached to the report). He asked council approval to perform the garage work.
Costlow also reported assisting the FBI with a threat call and said he had relayed a resident’s report of suspicious activity on Hocking Street to the Fairfield County task force. He asked whether the village could send a public notice about junk vehicles and suggested the village consider contracting with a salvage tow company to remove and title abandoned vehicles at no cost to the village if owners sign the vehicles over.
Council did not record extended debate on these operational items in the minutes; Chief Costlow indicated he would share county-provided zoning ordinances with Fiscal Officer Haley and Solicitor Meade for possible incorporation into village code.
