Stacee Farrell, director of Keep Athens Clarke County Beautiful, told the Athens Ben Epps Airport Authority on March 24 that the corridor between the airport and downtown creates an opportunity to improve first impressions of the community through targeted plantings and signage. Farrell asked the Authority to consider partnerships to enhance the airport entrance and route into town.
Dr. Diane Napier and several Authority members agreed to schedule a site visit to the airport property so staff and volunteers can evaluate potential locations for landscaping and a sign on Lexington Highway. Jessica Turner, the airport’s Tower Chief, offered that visiting members could view the site from the top of the control tower as part of the assessment.
Farrell framed the proposal as an extension of Keep Athens Clarke County Beautiful’s existing work — environmental education and plantings — and asked the Authority to brainstorm collaborative options. Members discussed linking the effort to the Lexington Highway Corridor work and noted landscaping at the airport’s parking areas and entry points as possible priorities.
The Authority did not take a formal vote on funding or commitments at the meeting; members agreed the next step is an on-site assessment and follow-up discussion at a future meeting.
