Commission reviews draft to let Brownsburg Town Court hear local ordinance cases

The Pittsboro commission was briefed on a draft agreement that would allow Brownsburg Town Court to hear the town’s ordinance violations. The chief (Speaker 1) said the town attorney is still reviewing the document and that he included the draft in the meeting packet for commissioners to read.

Jason (Speaker 3), identified in the meeting as the commission’s attorney, said staff will send the final draft to Brownsburg’s counsel (Scott) for review and then present the version for the commission’s consideration. "Once mister Boisnevah is done with it, we're gonna send it to Scott," Speaker 3 said, and staff will circulate the final document for the commission to confirm they are "all good with the final version."

Speaker 1 described the practical effect: if approved, Brownsburg Town Court would hear the commission’s ordinance cases and would collect the fines and fees. An exhibit included in the packet lists fines and costs "about 50 some dollars," Speaker 1 said, and he noted that current state-statute tickets return only about $4 to the municipality.

Speaker 3 added that necessary resolutions and supporting paperwork will be prepared for each council to sign when the draft is finalized. No formal vote was taken at this meeting; staff said they will bring the finalized agreement and related resolutions back to the commission for formal action when the town attorney and Brownsburg counsel complete their reviews.

Next steps: staff will send the final draft to Brownsburg counsel and circulate the document to commissioners; a formal motion and vote are expected when the final version is available.
