Council directs solicitor to draft 5-mill police levy replacement for ballot

Morgan told council the Licking County Board of Elections deadline to place a levy on the ballot is Aug. 7, which would require council action that night to meet timing for ballot preparation.
Councilmembers discussed the political appetite for various levels. Councilmember Andrea Chapman said she would not support a larger increase but backed placing a 5-mill replacement on the ballot; she moved to direct the Village Solicitor to prepare the necessary legislation. The motion passed unanimously. Solicitor Wesley K. Untied confirmed that the existing levy will not be lost if a replacement fails and advised on ballot-timing constraints.
Council agreed to bring legislation at the next meeting to allow for three public readings before the election filing deadline and to undertake outreach to residents before a final placement on the ballot.
