A representative of the prosecutor's office asked the Rush County commissioners to allow the office to advertise for and hire a replacement for Deputy David Thompson so the new hire can be trained before Thompson takes office as a Superior Court judge.
The speaker said Thompson is expected to assume judicial office after the general election and that, under state court administration rules, Thompson will be barred from contacting cases in the prosecutor's office once his judgeship is official. "So we're already gonna kinda start that in July outside of any new cases so we don't have any politics of interest," the prosecutor's office official told the board, adding the office wants to hire a replacement to train during the final two months of Thompson's service.
The official asked the commissioners to approve moving $20,000 "through that 25 0 2 fund" (referred to in the record as the pretrial/diversion fund) to cover salary and benefits for the initial period so county general funds would not be required. "That should cover their salary benefits with holdings for that time period," the official said.
A motion to allow advertising and to proceed with hiring was made, seconded and carried by the board. The minutes record the board's support to move forward; no individual vote tallies were recorded in the transcript.
The board did not set a precise hire date during the meeting; the official said the intent is for the new hire to begin working before Thompson leaves and for regular pay status to begin in January once Thompson's departure is final.
