Council tables decision on Gordon Street water taps after $28,500 estimate; seeks more bids

The council discussed a water-tap issue on Gordon Street where five new homes are being built and the main lines were found in the middle of the roadway. Contractor Mike Killeen had been installing taps and, after locating the mains, proposed either multiple digs to tap existing lines or tying into a 6" replacement line at Park and Thomas and running a 2" service to serve all five lots. City Clerk Lisa Johnson said an estimate of $28,500 was provided; the estimate arrived after a delay caused by Hurricane Helene.
Council Member Busby Courson asked about grant availability; City Clerk Johnson said grants exist but are unlikely for a project of this size and would take months to secure. Council Member Carl Spano said the city has reserve funds earmarked for water and raised traffic-control considerations; Mrs. Johnson said the city can recover normal tap costs from the homeowners.
Council Member Busby Courson moved to request other bids for comparison and table the decision until the next regular meeting on Nov. 5; Council Member Michelle Lane seconded. The motion passed, recorded as 4-0. The council also voted to enter executive session to discuss personnel later in the meeting and reentered regular session before adjourning.
