Smyth County appeals board elects officers, adopts by-laws and sets 2025 meeting calendar

The Smyth County Local Board of Building Code Appeals met Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. in the Smyth County Office Building for a brief organizational session in which officers were elected, by-laws were adopted and the 2025 meeting schedule was set.
Chairman Cameron Wolfe Jr. called the meeting to order at approximately 6:01 p.m. The board confirmed that the County Administrator had appointed Becca Creasy as Secretary based on prior training; Clegg Williams noted that voting for secretary and clerk would not take place. Bill Huber moved to approve the agenda as amended; Greg Blevins seconded. The motion passed with four yeas (Brian Reynolds, Bill Huber, Greg Blevins and Chad Ellis), zero nays and one abstention (Cameron Wolfe Jr.); Jim May and Les Whitt were recorded as absent.
During officer elections, Brian Reynolds nominated Bill Huber for Vice Chairman; Greg Blevins seconded. The board recorded four yeas (Cameron Wolfe Jr., Brian Reynolds, Greg Blevins and Chad Ellis), zero nays and one abstention (Bill Huber). For the chairman election, Clegg Williams served as temporary chair; Bill Huber nominated Cameron Wolfe Jr., a motion to close nominations was seconded by Brian Reynolds, and the board voted unanimously (5 yeas: Wolfe Jr., Reynolds, Huber, Blevins, Ellis; 0 nays; 2 absent: May, Whitt) to elect Wolfe as Chairman for calendar year 2025.
The board took routine organizational actions by adopting the Jan. 2, 2024, minutes (motion by Bill Huber, seconded by Greg Blevins) and adopting the by-laws as presented (motion by Brian Reynolds, seconded by Greg Blevins); both motions passed unanimously.
The board also set a contingency meeting calendar for 2025: if there are no appeals in 2025, the next meeting will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2026, at 6:00 p.m., and future meetings will occur on the first Tuesday of each month as needed. In other business, Clegg Williams introduced code enforcement officers Brian Thompson and Cody Ridge and noted Chad Ellis as the alternate Local Board of Building Code Appeals member.
Chairman Cameron Wolfe Jr. adjourned the meeting at 6:11 p.m.
The meeting included only organizational votes and introductions; no appeals, hearings or substantive policy decisions were recorded.
